How It Works
The hours calculator parses check-in times by converting `HH:MM` strings into cumulative minutes past midnight. The duration is solved as: $\text{Total Hours} = (\text{Clock Out Minute} - \text{Clock In Minute} - \text{Break Minutes}) / 60$.\n\nWeekly sums split at the standard 40-hour overtime barrier. Pay estimations apply the standard hourly rate to base hours and the scaled overtime rate to overtime hours.
Formula Used
Hours Worked = (OutMinutes − InMinutes − BreakMinutes) / 60
Clock-in and clock-out times are converted to total minutes past midnight. The elapsed duration is adjusted for breaks and divided by 60 to convert the value to decimal hours.
Total Pay = Regular Hours × Rate + Overtime Hours × Rate × 1.5
This calculates earnings by splitting hours worked at the 40-hour weekly threshold. Hours exceeding 40 are multiplied by the overtime premium rate (usually 1.5 times the standard rate).
Worked Example
Here is a step-by-step example of how these values are calculated:
Daily Shift
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (30 min break)
Mon-Fri (5 days)
Identical Shifts
Pay Rate
$25/hr
Result: Daily Hours: 7.50 hrs. Weekly Hours: 37.50 hrs. Overtime: 0 hrs. Estimated Gross Pay: $937.50.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the calculator handle overnight shifts?
If your clock-out time is numerically earlier than your clock-in time (e.g., in at 10:00 PM, out at 6:00 AM), the calculator automatically detects that the shift ends on the following calendar day, adding 24 hours to the duration calculation.
How should I format partial hours?
The calculator automatically converts clock-in/out schedules to decimals. For example, 7 hours and 30 minutes displays as `7.50h`.
