How It Works

GPA is computed as the weighted average of grade points. For each course, grade value (e.g. A = 4.0) is multiplied by the credits: $\text{Points}_C = \text{Grade}_C \times \text{Credits}_C$. Cumulative GPA is then total points divided by total credits: $GPA = \frac{\sum \text{Points}_C}{\sum \text{Credits}_C}$.

Formula Used

GPA = ∑ [Grade Points × Course Credits] / ∑ Course Credits
GPA is a weighted average where grade points (e.g. A = 4.0, B = 3.0) are weighted by course credits. This represents academic performance relative to the workload of each course.

Worked Example

Here is a step-by-step example of how these values are calculated:

Mathematics A (4 credits)
History B (3 credits)
Result: Points: `4.0*4 + 3.0*3 = 25`. Credits: `7`. GPA: `25 / 7 = 3.57`.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA calculates grades on a standard 4.0 scale regardless of class difficulty. Weighted GPA grants extra weight (typically up to 5.0) for Advanced Placement (AP) or honors classes.
How does an F affect GPA?
An F adds 0 grade points to your total but still counts in the denominator as course credits, significantly lowering your overall cumulative average.
